Thank you for visiting the LSU College of Human Sciences & Education. Our college has our finger on the pulse of success. That’s because we know that true success HAS a pulse and a heartbeat. Our students are the heart of this college, and our mission is an important one -- to educate students who are dedicated to improving quality of human life across the lifespan.

joshua ellis

ELLIS PUTS SCHOLARSHIP FIRST - $1.2m nsf grant to recruit and prepare future stem teachers

Joshua Ellis, PhD, Associate Professor of Science/STEM Education in the Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education, is a member of an LSU faculty team that has been awarded a $1,187,387 grant from the National Science Foundation for the preparation of future STEM teachers.

LSU Healthy Aging Research Center Receives $5M HRSA Grant

Scott Wilks, PhD, will be the principal investigator of a five-year, $5 million Health Resources & Services Administration grant to use toward educating and training primary care and geriatrics workforces in rural and underserved areas in dementia-friendly care, with a specific focus on Alzheimer’s Disease, for their project titled “Louisiana-Mississippi Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Project”.

Rizzuto Co-Leads $4.5M NSF Grant Nationwide


LSU’s Tracey Rizzuto, PhD, is co-leading a $4.5 million National Science Foundation (NSF) project to reimagine promotion and tenure practices across U.S. universities. Working with lead investigator Christiane Spitzmüeller of UC Merced, Rizzuto will help develop a national center to create fairer, more inclusive, and evidence-based faculty evaluation systems. Their research has been featured in Science.org and Nature.com.

SHAPING FUTURES: Workforce Development & Summer Camp for Rising High School Seniors


LSU Social Research & Evaluation Center hosted 20 high school seniors for “Shaping Futures: Mental Health Leaders of Tomorrow”, a one-week intensive and immersive mental health workforce experience. Shaping Futures, a $100K Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Louisiana grant, offered curriculum in the basics of mental health, the importance of early intervention, ethics, diagnoses, active listening, and self-care.

making history: heintz has made it A FIRST

LSU Kinesiology’s Liz Heintz is determined to #geauxchangelives through her dedication to saving lives. Heintz, currently a PhD Candidate in Kinesiology at LSU and in the Integrated Physiology and Molecular Medicine Lab at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, was recently approved for funding for a NIH F31 Predoctoral Fellowship. This is the first time a student from LSU Kinesiology has been awarded an F31.

Advancing Environmental Education

Ali McMillan, PhD, was named an Early-Career Research Fellow by the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. McMillan, an alumna of the School of Education, aims to advance science, STEM, and environmental education in the Gulf of Mexico region.

Lily Kim Championing Social Impact Through Research

Young Kyoung “Lily” Kim, PhD, LMSW, has been named a 2024 LSU Rainmaker Emerging Scholar, honoring her as one of the university’s most promising researchers in the Arts, Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Kim’s research bridges social work, behavioral science, and community engagement—illuminating ways to promote resilience, equity, and well-being. The LSU Rainmaker Award recognizes faculty whose scholarship is both rigorous and transformative, shaping a brighter and more just future.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

Emily Dare, PhD, Associate Professor of Science/STEM Education, partnered with the Museum of Science in Boston to co-facilitate professional learning for Louisiana educators. The training introduced Youth Engineering Solutions (YES)—a research-based, nationally implemented PreK–8 curriculum that builds computational thinking, engages students in real-world engineering, and fosters inclusive STEM identities.

Benson Named Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer

Amanda Benson, PhD, LAT, ATC, was recognized as Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association at its 2024 convention in New Orleans—one of only 14 individuals worldwide to receive this prestigious honor. The award recognizes more than two decades of professional excellence, leadership, and service to the athletic training profession. A professor and program director in LSU’s School of Kinesiology, Dr. Benson’s national impact, dedication to mentorship, and commitment to student success continue to elevate LSU’s Athletic Training program and the profession at large.

Baumgartner Named Meauxmentum Scholar

Jennifer Baumgartner, PhD, of the LSU Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education, was selected for the Louisiana Board of Regents’ inaugural cohort of Meauxmentum Scholars—one of just 100 faculty statewide and one of four from LSU. The program advances the state’s Momentum Approach under Louisiana Prospers, bringing faculty together to strengthen teaching practices that improve student access, success, and completion. Through statewide convenings, professional development, and faculty learning communities, Baumgartner will contribute to shaping strategies that better prepare students for meaningful credentials and future careers.
