Where Class Meets the Field: Training Tomorrow’s Energy Leaders

LSU’s Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering stands out nationally for offering hands-on well control training at the PERTT Lab—one of the only university-based full-scale well control and testing facilities in the U.S. The Petroleum Engineering Research, Training, and Testing (PERTT) Laboratory hosts two of the five undergraduate laboratories in the undergraduate program. At the PERTT Lab, classrooms aren't confined by walls—they extend into full-scale wells and advanced control rooms. Students in PETE 3037 (Petroleum Field Operations) and PETE 4060 (Prevention of Oil and Gas Well Blowouts) don’t just study drilling—they operate real equipment, run simulations, and interpret live data just like field engineers.

Industry partners join the experience by mentoring, sponsoring labs, and shaping a job-ready workforce. It’s a one-of-a-kind learning environment built on safety, innovation, and hands-on expertise.
